Pregnancy & Postnatal Massage & Reflexology – Frequently Asked Questions
What makes your treatments different from other pregnancy massage?
My background as a practising midwife means I have an in-depth understanding of pregnancy, birth, postnatal recovery and the physical and emotional changes women experience throughout motherhood. Every treatment is tailored specifically to you, with your comfort, safety and wellbeing at the centre of everything I do.
Unlike a standard spa treatment, your massage or reflexology session is provided by someone with specialist maternity knowledge and experience caring for women throughout pregnancy and beyond.
Do you work from a clinic?
No - I specialise exclusively in mobile treatments within your own home.
I bring everything needed for your appointment, including towels, blankets, pillows and massage equipment, so you can enjoy your treatment in a familiar and comfortable environment. I also provide background music to create a truly relaxing atmosphere.
Many women find this especially beneficial during pregnancy and the postnatal period, when travelling can feel tiring, uncomfortable or stressful. It also means you don't have to worry about childcare for any children who may be at home.
Is pregnancy massage safe?
Yes - when carried out appropriately, pregnancy massage is considered safe for most women. I am qualified to undertake client treatments from conception to up to one year postpartum.
As a midwife, I carefully assess your health, pregnancy history and any medical considerations before treatment to ensure your session is suitable and adapted to your individual needs. If there are any concerns or complications within your pregnancy, I may recommend seeking approval from your healthcare team before treatment.
What are the benefits of pregnancy massage?
Pregnancy massage may help to:
-
Relieve back, hip and pelvic discomfort
-
Ease muscular tension and aches
-
Reduce swelling and feelings of heaviness
-
Improve relaxation and sleep
-
Reduce stress and anxiety
-
Support emotional wellbeing during pregnancy
-
Encourage time for rest and self-care
Each treatment is adapted to your stage of pregnancy and how your body is feeling on the day.
What is reflexology?
Reflexology is a gentle complementary therapy involving the application of pressure to specific points on the feet, which correspond to different areas of the body.
Many women find reflexology deeply relaxing during pregnancy and the postnatal period. Treatments are designed to support relaxation, wellbeing and balance during this important time.
Can I have reflexology during pregnancy?
Yes - pregnancy reflexology can be enjoyed safely throughout most pregnancies when provided by a suitably trained practitioner.
As a midwife specialising in maternity complementary therapies, I tailor every treatment carefully to your individual pregnancy and wellbeing.
Can treatments help induce labour?
Complementary therapies are sometimes used to encourage relaxation and support the body in preparation for labour. However, no treatment can guarantee the onset of labour. My bespoke Birth Preparation and Promote Natural Labour appointments are a great way to prepare your body and mind for birth, and promote labour when the time is right for your baby and your body.
What should I wear for my treatment?
Please wear whatever feels most comfortable for you. For full body massage/treatments involving legs and feet, I usually find it easiest if you are in your underwear or small shorts, while loose low-rise bottoms work best for upper body treatments.
Your comfort and dignity are always prioritised. Towels, sheets and blankets are used throughout your treatment to protect your modesty, and supportive pillows are carefully positioned to help you feel completely relaxed and comfortable.
How will I be positioned during treatment?
Your positioning will be carefully adapted depending on your stage of pregnancy and your comfort. For massage I tend to use a side-lying position with plenty of support pillows to ensure appropriate posture and optimal comfort. I can however, use seated massage positions if this suits you better.
If you are having a combination of massage and reflexology I use both side-lying massage and an upright seated position on my massage couch during the treatment.
For Reflexology only treatments, I use a zero gravity chair which comfortably supports your body in a semi-recumbent seated position, reducing areas of tension in your body.
How long are appointments?
Appointment lengths vary depending on the treatment booked, and current treatment options and timings can be found on the treatment pages. Please note that the time listed for relaxation treatments refers to the hands-on treatment time itself; your overall appointment will be slightly longer to allow approximately 10–15 minutes before and after your treatment for, set-up and packing away of equipment.
Do I need to prepare anything before my appointment?
I simply ask that you have enough space available for me to set up comfortably. My massage couch measures 188 x 62cm, and I will need enough room to move safely around the couch during treatment — most living areas are perfectly suitable for this.
To help create a calm and relaxing environment, I can provide gentle spa-style background music via a Bluetooth speaker if you would like, although you are equally welcome to play your own music or sounds. On colder days, I use a heated couch cover for additional comfort, and I provide all pillows, towels and linen needed for your treatment.
Please also let me know in advance if there are any parking restrictions or access considerations at your home, as I need to park reasonably close due to carrying equipment. I am very happy to set up upstairs if needed, but if access involves more than one flight of stairs, I kindly ask that you inform me beforehand so I can complete an appropriate risk assessment.
Do you offer postnatal treatments?
Yes - postnatal treatments are a wonderful way to support recovery, rest and relaxation after birth, and I can provide postnatal treatments for you up until your baby's first birthday.
Treatments can help ease muscular tension from feeding, carrying and caring for your baby, while also providing valuable time for self-care during the early postnatal period.
Babies are always welcome to remain nearby during home appointments, and can be held or fed during your treatment if you wish.
When can I book a postnatal massage?
I can offer postnatal treatments straight after birth, so in most cases, treatments can usually be offered as soon as you feel ready and comfortable. Treatments can be provided up to one year after your baby is born. If you are unsure, please feel free to contact me before booking.
Which areas do you cover?
I am based in Witham, and travel approximately 20 minutes from home. I cover Witham, Chelmsford, Hatfield Peverel, Boreham, Kelvedon, Tiptree, Coggeshall, Maldon and surrounding areas.
If you are unsure whether I travel to your location, please feel free to get in touch before booking.
How do I book?
Appointments can be booked directly through me - please feel free to call, message or email me, or submit an online request for a home visit. If you have any questions before booking or would like guidance on which treatment may be most suitable, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
