Caesarean birth recovery is an often-overlooked area of postnatal care, and many women are left without the advice and ongoing support they deserve. Trained in caesarean scar therapy by the UK’s leading expert in the field, I combine specialist scar therapy with over a decade of midwifery experience to support your recovery.

C-section scar therapy (also known as scar massage) is a gentle, hands-on treatment using massage and scar mobilisation techniques to support healing, improve comfort and mobility, and help you reconnect with your scar. Your scar may feel tight, sensitive, numb or itchy, or you may notice pulling or restriction around your abdomen, pelvis or back. You may simply want to support your scar to heal as well as possible.

Treatment can usually begin from around six weeks after birth, once the wound has fully closed, but scar therapy can also be beneficial months or even years later.

Every treatment is tailored to you and progresses gently at your pace. Even if you can’t yet bear to touch your scar yourself, we can start wherever feels comfortable for you.

How can C-section scar therapy help?

Everyone's experience of a C-section scar is different. Some women notice very little discomfort, while others experience changes in sensation or movement around the scar months or even years after their birth. Scar therapy is beneficial for all caesarean scars, but may be particularly beneficial to help with the following:

  • Improve comfort and ease around the scar and lower abdomen

  • Reduce lumpy, raised or tight scar tissue

  • Support mobility of the skin and surrounding tissues

  • Reduce feelings of tightness or pulling

  • Support areas of altered sensation, such as numbness or sensitivity

  • Encourage you to reconnect with and become more comfortable touching your scar

  • Provide a relaxing opportunity to care for your postnatal body

What happens during a treatment?

Your treatment begins with a conversation about your birth, recovery and how your scar feels now. If it's a follow-up appointment, we will discuss and assess the outcomes of your last treatment. Then, with your consent I will examine the scar and the surrounding areas. We'll discuss any areas of discomfort or sensitivity and agree what you'd like to focus on.

We will then begin a hands-on treatment for the scar and surrounding areas. I'll explain each technique before beginning, and you remain in control throughout the treatment. Depending on your needs and how your scar is feeling, treatment may include gentle massage work around the scar, the surrounding abdomen and nearby tissues.

You will be given a treatment plan including massage techniques, exercises, recommendations for any products which may benefit your scar, and clinical advice.

You don't have to be comfortable with your scar being touched to benefit from treatment. If direct scar work doesn't feel right for you, we can adapt the treatment and work around the area instead. Your comfort, privacy and consent are always the priority.

How many treatments will I need?

Everyone’s scar and recovery are different. After your first appointment, we’ll discuss how your scar has responded and whether you may benefit from any further treatment. Some clients notice positive changes after just one session, while others may benefit from several appointments to achieve the best results.

Before your appointment

Please let me know if you have any concerns about your scar or postnatal recovery when requesting your appointment.

Scar therapy can be started from 6 weeks after birth, but isn't suitable if your incision is not fully healed, is open or weeping, or if you have signs of infection or another complication requiring medical assessment.

Ready to give your scar some care?

If you'd like to explore whether C-section scar therapy could be right for you, you're welcome to request an appointment.

There is no pressure to book a course of treatments. We can talk through your individual circumstances and decide together what feels appropriate for you.

Did You Know?

Your C-section scar can continue to change and mature for up to 2 years after birth — so it's never too late to give your scar some gentle care and attention.
